Hortus botanicus Leiden
Hortus botanicus Leiden has been part of the University of Leiden for 426 years, making it the oldest botanic garden of the Netherlands. Since its foundation the Hortus has been carrying out scientific research and public outreach and education related to their world renowned collections, including orchids, carnivorous plants, ferns, bulbs and many others. Their mission for the BigPicnic project is to raise peoples’ awareness of what they are eating; focussing on edible plants, where they come from, and the impact their production has on the environment. Through their BigPicnic outreach activities Hortus botanicus Leiden aim to engage with their regular garden visitors as well as new target groups, including young families that do not currently have a connection to the garden.
