Science Cafés and Workshop during Sofia Science Festival 2018

Sofia University Botanic Gardens organised two science cafés during Sofia Science Festival 2018 as well as a workshop for pupils. During the two-day fest, we also presented a thematic stand with common and unknown herbs and spices and some seasonal edible plant species.

The event took place in the middle of May at Sofia Tech Park.

Lectures were offered on two important topics linked with the food security and especially to food access and food utilisation and these topics were discussed with the audience. During the talks, it was pointed out that we should focus our attention on food heritage.

The science cafes were open for students and general public.

A workshop on urban gardening was organised for pupils in the 4th and 5th grade. Outdoor activities presented the opportunities to grow edible plants in the city. Both children and teachers were excited to get the knowledge on this and were enthusiastic to start with their own edible garden at home.

The thematic stand presented both the BigPicnic project and various edible plants that could be grown in the city. Hundreds of students and families visited it.

Next steps include participation in FOOD2030 High level conference and science cafés in an extended format at the University Botanic Gardens.
